When You'll Need Digital Printing Services

There are times when digital printing services are a better choice than offset printing

1. You have a project that requires a quick turnaround

If you need your print project in a hurry, then going with digital printing services is the best option. Offset printing requires time to make individualized plates whereas digital prints can be easily produced at the last minute.

In addition, offset inks require time to dry (1 to 2 days) whereas digital printing pieces don't require any drying time.

2. Your project requires variable data printing

Digital printing services are better if you want to personalize each printed piece

Variable data printing (VDP) is one of the most useful digital printing services. It is a type of digital printing that allows you to change various elements on the printed piece while you are printing without having to stop or slow the printing process down. You can change the text, graphics, and images on each individual printed piece in order to give your customers a more personalized experience.

For example, if you are doing a direct mailing campaign you could use VDP to change the name and address as well as other personal details on each letter for your various recipients. VDP uses information from a database or external file such as an Excel spreadsheet to swap out and replace the personal information for each letter while keeping the same basic layout. You can use VDP for printing jobs such as:

  • Direct mailing

  • Customer relationship management

  • Advertising campaigns

  • Invoicing

  • Addressing self-mailers, brochures, or postcard campaigns

3. You need a smaller quantity of printed materials

Digital printing is better for smaller jobs; offset is better for quantities over 1,000

Offset printing requires making an individual plate for each print job, so you will need to pay an upfront fee for making your print job regardless of how many pieces you need. Therefore, the larger your job, the more cost-effective offset printing will be.

Digital printing services, on the other hand, are charged at a flat rate for each piece with no upfront fee for making a plate because it doesn't use plates. If you need a smaller amount of printed materials, then using digital printing services is your best choice.

A good rule of thumb is if you need less than 1,000 printed pieces, then go with digital printing. If you need more than 1,000, then offset is probably your better choice as the price per piece decreases with each piece you print.

4. You need an inexpensive hard-copy proof of your project

Digital printing services can provide you with inexpensive, hard-copy proofs of your project very quickly. If you go with offset printing, you will pay a lot more for your proofs and you will have to wait longer for them.

What's the difference between digital and offset printing?

Digital printing does not require the use of plates

Digital printing:

Digital printing is either toner or inkjet printing. Both toner and inkjet printing uses CMYK colour to achieve printing full colour on a wide spectrum of paper stocks. Digital printing uses digital-based images from desktop publishing or other digital sources to print directly onto a wide variety of media.

Ideal for smaller volume runs, digital printing offers many possibilities for developing your project. This technology delivers on-demand printing for brilliant, eye-catching results. Digital printing is perfect for small business solutions.

Offset Printing:

Offset printing involves making metal plates of the image you need printed. The reason it is called "offset" is because the ink isn't transferred directly onto the finished paper but instead it is first transferred onto a rubber blanket that is then rolled onto the paper. It is ideal for printing longer runs, over 1,000, with either single, multi or full-colour printing.

Offset printing is often considered to be a higher quality printing method, however, digital printing technology has improved considerably over the years, so now you are able to get a much better-finished product than you could when it first was introduced.

Offset printing can give you many advantages, such as:

  • Highly distinct images and lettering that appear incredibly clean and polished.

  • No visible blemishes or streaks

  • Superior colour fidelity or colour balance

  • Customized colour inks designed for individual printing resulting in perfect hues
