Types of Custom Printed Shirts

Fashion

Probably the most common use for custom printed shirts is for fashion and style.

You can bring a design and create a one-of-a-kind shirt to add to your wardrobe.

Just remember to only use logos that you’ve designed or have license to use, and follow your region’s copyright laws.

Souvenir

Shirts-as-souvenirs are perfect if you’re hosting a special event, or perhaps if you’re a business that wants to offer clothes that customers can buy with your branding.

It’s common to find custom-branded clothing at breweries, tourist locations, or any other place where people will want to have something to remind them of their trip.

Artist Shirts

One of the best ways to advance your career as an artist or band is to offer merchandise. A classic piece of merchandise sold by almost every band is cool custom printed shirts.

Band shirts have become so common that people have even begun to wear them as fashion pieces.

If you’re an up-and-coming artist, consider getting an order of custom printed shirts made to take with you to events.

Team Shirts

With different companies and organizations always putting on different events, it’s worth remembering that you can order custom printed shirts to hand out to volunteers or to help keep staff organized.

For business retreats, event organizers, or for any competitive sport, custom printed shirts are a straightforward and cheap way to help organize people.

Cleaning & Maintenance

It’s important to know how to take care of your custom printed shirts once you’ve got them. With proper care, printed graphics can stay bright and crisp for a long time.

Below, we summarize two techniques you can use to clean your printed shirts:

Technique #1 - Hand Washing

  1. Turn the shirts inside out.

  2. Fill a tub or basin with cool water.

  3. Add a small amount of mild laundry detergent and mix it together.

  4. Immerse the shirts in the liquid for at least 10 minutes. You can do this with multiple shirts at once, but make sure they are of similar colour just in case any colour bleeding happens.

  5. Gently agitate the shirts, then rinse them with cool water.

  6. Hang them to air dry, or gently tumble-dry them in a machine at low heat or no heat at all.

This method can be time-consuming but is the gentlest way to clean your printed clothes while ensuring minimal damage to the printed graphics.

Technique #2 - Machine Washing

  1. Turn the shirts inside out.

  2. Pre-treat any stains by dabbing a bit of mild detergent on them.

  3. Add clothes to the machine along with mild detergent.

  4. Set your machine settings to “Delicates” if possible.

    • I.e. Low spin speed, normal soil level, cold water temperate.

  5. Hang them to air dry, or gently tumble-dry them in a machine at low heat or no heat at all.

Do your best to avoid hot water, fabric softeners, or bleach. For more helpful tips on washing custom printed shirts, check out this exhaustive article from The Portable Laundry.

Ordering Custom Printed Shirts

The following are a few different tips to guide you when you’re considering making an order of custom printed shirts.

These details are general and will be slightly different depending on the company you’ve used, so the best way to get the hard facts is to contact a printing company directly.

  • Price - If you only order a couple of shirts, it may cost $30 per shirt, but as you get up to volumes of 100+ it may lower to $7 per shirt.

Price can vary based on materials and location, but the most important factor is how many shirts you’re ordering at once. The more shirts you order at one time, the cheaper the price will be per shirt.

  • Different Printing Methods - Some of the most common methods for printing on shirts are screen printing, dye sublimation, and heat pressing. To learn more about each of these methods, as well as the pros/cons, click here.

The method you choose for your custom shirts will affect their longevity and can influence the price.

  • How to Order - Most custom shirt/clothing stores have physical locations you can visit. If you want details before you commit to visiting in person, you can call/email, or fill out an online form if the business has one.

It helps to have a rough idea of what design you want and how many shirts you want before you get in touch, but if you don’t, the printing company can help you decide.

  • Finding a Printer - Printing companies can be found in most cities. When looking for a company to go with, check their reviews, see what products they offer on their website, and of course get in touch to inquire about specifics. Many companies offer free quotes to help you decide how to proceed.

Custom printing on clothes is much more popular than it used to be, especially in the city. Do your research and you’re sure to find a business that can fulfill your order.
